For me the plot isn't as important as the quality of the writing, the atmosphere developed, the ideas conveyed. Take The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James, for example. Those opening pages are so impressive, but what actually happens? They have a picnic on the grass and then they go inside and look at paintings, but it's so much more meaningful than just the action.
